Student Inquiry in the Research Process

Phase 3: Strategy
Instructor Guide

“Encyclopedia is a good place to start, but not a good place to stop.”

Kym Kramer, Library Media Specialist, Fishback Creek Public Academy

Goal:

The goal during the Strategy is for students to select the most appropriate resources to answer their inquiry and become more aware of the world around them through informational sources available in traditional and non-traditional formats.

Objectives:

  1. Students will be oriented on the resources available to them in their media center.
  2. Students will be oriented on the resources available to them in their community.
  3. Students will select resources that will be most appropriate for their search.

Library Media Specialist will:

  •  Provide students with information about the location of various media center resources and how to utilize them.

Teacher and Library Media Specialist together will:

  • “Coach” students about which traditional and non-traditional resources would be helpful for the inquiry.

  • Conference with students needing guidance.

  • Remediate instruction with whole class or small groups as need arises based on student's Daily Reflections.
